Photoshop turns 30: we review the newest of this amazing tool

Did you know that brothers Thomas and John Knoll developed Photoshop for a year before presenting the program in Silicon Valley? Yes, it took them 12 months to refine their project, which today is no less than 30 years old. What other proof that it is worth investing in our dreams?

Photoshop for iPad

Now your creativity can go anywhere you want, thanks to Adobe Photoshop for iPad. While the latest release focused on composing and retouching tools, Adobe today announced two new features, on the occasion of its anniversary. These are the Object Selection and Typography Properties tools. What will these characteristics allow us?

– Select a specific area on the canvas and, thanks to Adobe Sensei, automatically find the object in seconds. This tool uses the same Artificial Intelligence as the Select Subject tool, so it will fit your needs. You can select from whole objects to select while drawing.

– Have precise control over text layers. This update has expanded the typography properties and now includes advanced character and option controls, layer, tracking, direction and scaling.

The functions that were announced in November 2019 included the following:

– Work piles of layers and use the tools on the toolbar as you do on your desktop. Slide, pinch, touch and scribble.

– Automatically save your files in the Adobe cloud as you work, so you can access them on your desktop or iPad.

– Combine digital elements to create something new in multiple layers. Make sophisticated selections, create masks and use brushes with the precise control of your finger or Apple Pencil.

– Edit and improve images, as well as remove unwanted items.

– Easily select and duplicate images, as well as copy and paste selections to create simple compounds.

New Object Selection tool

Thanks to the functions of Adobe Sensei, which uses AI (Artificial Intelligence) and machine learning, the new Adobe Photoshop Object Selection tool “simplifies the process of selecting a single object, several objects or parts of an object in one image, whether people, cars, furniture, pets, clothes and much more. ”

How does it work? According to the Adobe blog, you just have to “draw a rectangular region or a loop around the object, and the Object Selection tool will automatically select the object inside the defined region”. In this way, even the most difficult selections will be streamlined.

Remember that to access this tool you can go to the Tools panel, where you can also find the Quick Selection and Magic Wand tools, or in the same panel, but in the Select and apply mask workspace.

Documents in the cloud in Photoshop

Desktop version 21.0 of Photoshop not only allows you to upload documents to the cloud, but also open and edit them easily. To be able to access the cloud from any device we just have to connect to the Internet and “open the PSD file in the Documents tab in the cloud on the application’s home screen”. So you won’t have to worry about the storage capacity of your computer, laptop or iPad.

What are the advantages of this function? Optimal access to files on several devices, use of a single file on all products, keep your files updated and secure and be able to work offline.

To keep in mind: Documents in the cloud, Creative Cloud files and other synchronized files are part of Creative Cloud – the (paid) Adobe cloud service – and are taken into account for storage allocation.

Improvements to presets

There is no doubt that the latest version of Photoshop is designed for user satisfaction. Proof of this is the redesign of the presets. What does this novelty include?

Photoshop sums it up like this:

– New modern presets, such as gradients, motifs, shapes and styles, and exclusive panels for the first three.

– Possibility of managing the presets by organizing in groups. That is, you can drag and move the presets to reorganize and reorder them in the panels.

– Possibility of dragging gradients, patterns, samples and styles from the presets panel to the canvas.

– A dynamic preview on the canvas when clicking through the presets to try out the different looks.

Adobe Photoshop Camera

Although not yet available, many users are already looking forward to Adobe Photoshop Camera. And with all that it brings is not for less, because it is a new application that will include “the best lenses and effects for photos, even before taking them”. According to Adobe, this app promises the following:

– Many lenses and effects to apply before or after taking photos. These will be easy to exchange and you can save your favorites to use them again and again.

– Photoshop lenses and camera effects created by the most popular artists and influencers.

– Publish photos from the same application.

– Quick solutions: portrait lighting and elimination of distortions.
